New Exhibits Feature Winners, a Wonder Woman, and a World Premiere!
The winter exhibits at the Texas Quilt Museum will feature top winners from the International Quilt Association’s judged show, a series of stunning pictorial works by one of the world’s best-known quilt artists, and a world premiere “seasonal” collection by members of the Studio Art Quilt Associates. They will run January 10-March 24, 2018.
In addition, Museum Curator Dr. Sandra Sider will give a free lecture called “Season After Season: Behind the Scenes” on February 23 at 3 p.m. (with Museum admission free beginning at 2 p.m.). She will also be signing copies of the new book from SAQA for which she was the editor, Art Quilts Unfolding: 50 Years of Innovation. Here’s a rundown of the exhibits!
World of Beauty: IQA Prizewinners 2018
These 32 quilts all took home a prize from the more than 600 entered and 325 finalists in the quilt world’s most prestigious annual competition. The show featured more than 20 different categories and $97,250 in cash (non-purchase) prizes, awarded at the 2018 International Quilt Festival Houston. Note: This exhibit will only be on display until March 10. It will be replaced by an early installation of the “Southern Charm: Antique Quilts from the Collection of Mary. W. Kerr” exhibit for the final weekend.

Stories of West Africa by Hollis Chatelain
These 15 colorful art quilts relate to the cultures encountered by Chatelain while doing humanitarian work and residing in Africa. Her use of textiles conveys the warmth of this society, with the background of each quilt inspired by the beautiful and decorative fabrics that are omnipresent in West Africa. Museumgoers will also be able to listen to Chatelain’s own voice in her podcast which tells a short story about each textile piece.
